Star Wars Alum Joins the Kingdom of Corona
Disney's highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Tangled is officially expanding its cast, and it is bringing in a major Star Wars heavyweight for a brand-new character.
According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, Diego Luna—best known for his critically acclaimed, award-nominated performance in Disney+'s Andor—has officially signed on to the project. However, fans of the 2011 animated classic won't be able to guess who he is playing. Luna is stepping into an entirely original role crafted specifically for the live-action feature.
The Tangled Cast Takes Shape
Luna joins a rapidly growing, star-studded ensemble. The core trio of the beloved story has already been locked in:
- Teagan Croft will let her magical, glowing hair down as the captive princess, Rapunzel.
- Milo Manheim is set to deliver his best "smolder" as the charming, wisecracking outlaw, Flynn Rider.
- Kathryn Hahn will bring her signature comedic and villainous chops to the role of the vain, manipulative Mother Gothel.
With Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman, Better Man) sitting in the director's chair, the film is expected to lean heavily into grand, theatrical musical numbers. While the details of Luna's original character are being kept strictly under wraps, there is a very strong chance the Mexican actor will be flexing his vocal cords alongside the rest of the cast.
Behind the scenes, the script has been penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor, with Kristin Burr (who brought us the stylish 2021 Cruella) attached to produce.
Surviving Disney's Live-Action Shakeup
Getting to the casting stage has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Tangled remake. In early 2025, Disney executives reportedly reconsidered their entire slate of live-action adaptations following the underwhelming box office performance of Snow White.
The Tangled project was nearly shelved entirely. Fortunately, the massive commercial success of the live-action Lilo & Stitch just two months later proved that audience appetite was still there, prompting Disney to reverse course and officially greenlight Rapunzel's return to the big screen.
The original animated feature was a colossal hit, grossing over $591 million globally and spawning a successful Disney Channel spin-off series. Now, with the cast officially coming together, the live-action Tangled is preparing to begin filming in Spain this June.
