High School DxD is Back, But Still No Season 5

High School DxD returns with new light comic volumes, DX.8 and Junior High School DxD 3, releasing October 18, 2025.

Chuffed to bits, are we? After a three-year-long wait that felt like an eternity, fans of the beloved High School DxD franchise can finally stop checking their calendars. The series is making a massive return next month, bringing not one but two brand-new volumes to the bookshops. This is a huge deal, as it puts a much-needed end to the content drought that has had fans pining away for new material. It’s a brilliant bit of news that’s a real silver lining, even for those still holding out for that elusive anime Season 5 announcement.

The Long-Awaited Return of DX

First off, let’s talk about the main event. High School DxD DX.8: The Job of a Super-Class Devil is hitting the shelves on October 18, 2025. For anyone who's been following the series, you’ll know this is particularly special, as it marks the return of the popular DX short story collection after a proper three-year hiatus. These volumes are a treasure trove for fans, as they’re a compilation of short tales written by the series creator, Ichiei Ishibumi, himself. The stories are often little side-adventures that explore the characters' backstories and fun, slice-of-life moments that we don't always get in the main storyline.

The best bit about this new volume is that it’s set to include a brand-new, never-before-seen story. It will follow the main lad, Issei Hyodo, as he navigates his new responsibilities now that he’s become a full-fledged High-Class Devil. This is dead exciting because it provides a fresh look at our favourite hero as he takes on more grown-up roles in the underworld. The news is also quite significant given that Dragon Magazine, the publication where many of these short stories first appeared, stopped its print run earlier this year. So, the fact that Kadokawa is still bringing these out shows a clear commitment to the series.

New Adventures for a New Generation

While everyone's eyes are on Issei, let’s not forget about the other new book coming out. The franchise is also releasing the third volume of its spin-off series, Asgard of the Music Festival. This one is a bit different, as it's written by Rippu Shinonome, though it’s based on a draft by the creator Ishibumi. This series kicked off in May 2024 and introduces a brand-new protagonist named Zekka Miyamoto. The story is set after the events of the High School DxD Hero anime, so it's a great way to see what the world is like after the big events of the main series.

The plot for the new volume sounds absolutely brilliant. It sees the Occult Research Club, which includes some of our old favourites, forming a band. They then head to the Norse holy land of Asgard to take part in a music festival. It's great to see the franchise expanding its world and exploring new characters while still keeping the spirit of the original series alive.

The Waiting Game for Anime Fans

Despite all this cracking news about the light novels, there’s no getting around the fact that a big chunk of the fandom is still waiting with bated breath for an announcement for High School DxD Season 5. The last season of the anime, High School DxD Hero, aired well over five years ago, which is a proper long time to wait. A lot of fans were a bit gutted last year when a "big announcement" turned out to be just a celebration of the series reaching a circulation milestone. It was a bit of a bummer, really.

However, the team did follow that up with a promising statement, saying that High School DxD would continue in "all forms." While that’s not a definite confirmation of an anime season, the release of these new books does show that the franchise is still very much active and a priority for Kadokawa. It's a clear signal that there's still life in the old dragon yet.

All in all, the return of the light novels is a reason to be chuffed to bits. It gives fans something new to sink their teeth into and keeps the dream of High School DxD Season 5 alive and well. Now, if only we could get a proper announcement about that anime...
